Mattress shopping can be very confusing and overwhelming! Memory foam, Latex, Gel, Springs vs Foam, Air, Water, so many options to choose from! Let us help you make a more informed decision, because let''s face it, a mattress is a huge investment from a health and quality of life perspective.
Not all mattresses are created equal! The foundation of a good mattress begnins with the support system. In an innerspring mattress, the rule of thumb for a quality queen size mattress is 400 coils. Most consumers become infatuated with coil counts as opposed to gauge and construction. More coils do not always translate into better quality. At Roanoke Mattress we believe pocketed coils offer the best combination of support and conformability.
When it comes to an all foam latex or memory foam mattress, the support core is essential to the durability and comfort of the mattress. When looking for a memory foam mattress, a core density of 2.5 pounds or greater is considered superior quality. True latex mattresses do not utilize polyurethane foam as the core. A true latex mattress has a latex core, free of polyurethane based foams, with an ILD between 25-37. The higher the ILD, the firmer the mattress will be. Most manufacturers will use latex cores that range from 19-37. Generally speaking, a latex mattress core should last two decades before needing replacement.
The second important component of a good quality mattress, is the comfort layers. The quality of the comfort layers in a mattress is important, because it is usually the first thing to sag in a mattress. The comfort layers are what you sleep directly on every night, and if they are of poor quality they will give way and you will find yourself sleeping in a huge crater! Yikes. Memory Foam, Latex, And Other High Density Foams are ideal for comfort layers. Our personal opinion at Roanoke Mattress is that latex and memory foam are the best quality comfort layers, for comfort and durability.
The last component of a quality mattress is the edge and border of the mattress. Quality mattresses utilize foam encased edges which expand the sleeping surface, and strengthen the edge for those that like to sit on the border of their mattress.
These are the most basic things a mattress shopper should be aware of when trying to decide on a new mattress. The only way to know for sure what mattress is right for you is to visit our showroom on Williamson Road, across from The New Yorker Deli!

Why are there so many mattresses to choose from? Do they really expect me to try them all?! 0
Have you ever walked into a mattress store and wondered “why on earth are there so many?!” There are some mattress store showrooms that have upwards of 70 mattresses on display. Even I would consider that a bit extreme. However, because there are so many manufacturers with so many varieties of products that offer various benefits, it’s necessary to offer a wide assortment to ensure that each guest has several options to choose from.
Here’s the ‘catch 22’ if you will. Walking into a sea of mattresses can make what should be a pleasant experience, an intimidating one. Taking these things into consideration, at Roanoke Mattress we’ve taken several steps to ensure your experience is anything but intimidating. When visiting with us, we want you to feel, welcome, relaxed, and informed. While our sleep specialists are ready and able to answer any and all sleep related questions you may have, our showroom is also designed to be ‘sleeper friendly’ with each section clearly defined to make your mattress shopping easier, less time consuming, and less confusing.
In addition to the wealth of information our sleep specialists are eager to share, we also offer in store tablets, allowing you to do as little or as much research as you’d like while in the comfort of our store. While testing the mattresses you’re interested in, feel free to use our tablets or bring your own, to read customer reviews, visit our website, or listen to your favorite tunes. Whatever makes you feel relaxed while you nap.
Often times the sheer number of mattresses, not to mention the different types, and ever changing names, can make mattress shopping stressful. It should be anything but. So, whether you find yourself in a boutique shop of sorts, with only a handful of mattresses, or a mattress mega-store, just remember to take it one mattress at a time. The national sleep council suggests testing each prospective mattress at least 15 minutes. For this reason, At Roanoke Mattress we not only offer Free Naps, but complimentary pillow slips, & eye masks to make your ‘rest test’ experience a pleasant one.
We welcome you to stop by, and say hi anytime. We’re happy and ready to help any way we can. In addition to mattresses, we also offer a variety of accessories, including mattress toppers, pillows, sheets, and more. We look forward to serving you soon.
Why should I invest more in a mattress today If I’m still going to have to pay to replace it in a few years? 0
I’ll be the first to agree that most warranties aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. Not necessarily because the warranty itself is not valid, but the retailers have a way of making the warranty process so time consuming, and in some cases, so costly that most people forego the process altogether, & choose to suffer with their bad mattress, or invest all over again in a replacement, much to their chagrin. We agree that it shouldn’t be this way.
It seems as if most stores have deemed warranties a manufacturers issue, while we consider it a customer service issue. One that we gladly handle for each of our guests whenever necessary. We can’t speak for the others, but at Roanoke Mattress your warranty actually means something! If at any time during your warranty period you should experience any defects with your products we will gladly facilitate the process for any valid warranty claim on your behalf. Simply meaning, you only have to contact us, not the manufacturer. We pride ourselves on the fact that our customer service extends far beyond the point of the sale, for as long as you have our products in your home. After you’ve entrusted us with your investment, we would never dream of passing you off to a third party for assistance.
